ExxonMobil Finland Oy

ExxonMobil Finland Oy Ab operates a lubricant factory in the port of Naantali. The factory produces and packs lubricants under Mobil brand, such as Mobil 1, well known to car owners all over the world. Since 2003 the factory has been responsible for exporting Mobil products to Russia cluster and Baltic countries in addition to the domestic markets. The factory works in the harbor in shifts and employs around 80 workers. In addition to lubricant manufacturing, the unit has its own quality assurance laboratory in Naantali.

A base oil ship from ExxonMobil refineries in Europe ships base oils for the lubricants to Naantali periodically. At the factory different additional ingredients are added to the base oil to create different types of end products. The ingredients vary according to the desired qualities of the lubricant.

The ExxonMobil Finland Oy Ab factory in Naantali was founded in 1957. The site was chosen because the port had a well-situated, ready-made landing place for the base oil ship. The existence of a year-round free channel that ensured the uninterrupted shipping of oil to the factory also weighted in the decision. The channel in Naantali stays open and ice-free even in the coldest winters and the port is accessible in any weather. The components needed in the production process are shipped to the harbor and can be transported quickly from Europe on the boats of a cooperation partner sailing to the port.

Finnfeeds Finland Oy

Finnfeeds Finland Oy is part of the global Dupont group. The company produces and develops food and fodder improvements, industrial enzymes, sweeteners and sugar. Finnfeeds Finland Oy is part of the group’s Animal Nutrition division and specialises in the production of crystalline betaine (trimethylglycine) extracted from sugar beet-based solutions. The process uses a chromatographic separation method, patented by Danisco. The Finnfeeds Finland production facility is the largest betaine factory in the world.

The history of the Naantali plant goes back to 1951, when Oy Juurikassokeri Ab was founded. Sugar production started two years later. The new technology-based separation process started in 1978 and since 1979 the factory has produced betaine. The entire production effort was concentrated on the production of betaine in 1990, when sugar production in Naantali ceased.

Betaine is used in several grocery and chemical industry products, for example in animal fodder to increase growth, in cosmetic products such as moisturiser and to lessen skin irritation and in food as a functional ingredient. Betaine is also used in agriculture to increase the crop, especially in harsh growing environments.

For Finnfeeds Finland Oy, the location of the plant in the port of Naantali is a strategic choice, since most of the material arrives in sea containers or tankers from Europe and the USA. In addition, 97% of production is shipped to Europe, Asia and the Pacific, the Americas and Africa. The favourable logistical location of the plant in the port of Naantali in the logistical import and export hub is essential for the effective operation of the factory. The sheltered, always open channel is also a great advantage for Naantali, as many ingredients used in betaine production come from countries whose fleets are not meant for heavy winters and icy conditions in the north.

“For many years we have been very happy with our cooperation with the port of Naantali. Communication has always been positive, and the companies operating in the harbour have been able to find clear synergy benefits. Our company was the first to start cooperating with Fortum power plant for the supply of energy, for example.”

Neste

Neste creates solutions for combating climate change and accelerating a shift to a circular economy. We refine waste, residues and innovative raw materials into renewable fuels and sustainable feedstock for plastics and other materials. We are the world’s leading producer of renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel, developing chemical recycling to combat the plastic waste challenge. We aim at helping customers to reduce greenhouse gas emissions with our renewable and circular solutions by at least 20 million tons annually by 2030.

As a technologically advanced refiner of high-quality oil products with a commitment to reach carbon-neutral production by 2035, we are also introducing renewable and recycled raw materials such as waste plastic as refinery raw materials.

The history of Neste began during the war in the1940s when it was realised that Finland had no sufficient oil product reserves or domestic oil refining capabilities. The state built the first oil reserves in Naantali Tupavuori between 1943 and 1948, and in 1948 the reserve was transferred to be the responsibility of the new company, Neste Oy.

Today, Neste has terminal and harbour operations in Naantali.

Turun Seudun Energiantuotanto (TSE)

Heat for homes and energy for industry

Turun Seudun Energiantuotanto Oy ensures the production of heat for homes and energy for local industry. Currently, over 200,000 people in the Turku region already live in homes receiving district heating produced by TSE. TSE wants to combine long traditions with the most recent technological expertise in order to continue securing reliable energy production in the Turku region economically, efficiently and diversely.

Naantali Unit 4 is the pride of TSE. The modern multi-fuel power plant, completed in 2017, produces heat and power for the local region. A significant proportion of the fuel used in Unit 4 is forest residuals from nearby forests. With high operating efficiency, the unit reduces carbon dioxide emissions from energy production by more than 400,000 tonnes a year, an amount equal to the emissions from over 60,000 single-family houses every year. TSE owns also Oriketo bioheating plant and Kakola heat pumps in Turku.

TSE combines local expertise in the energy sector and top knowledge from the Nordic energy industry. Using the most advanced technology available, TSE’s goal is to produce as much electricity as possible while generating heat. Another goal is to harmonize the use of local and other sources of energy as required by the environment and market.

Turku Repair Yard

Turku Repair Yard, founded in 1989, continues the long traditions of Finnish ship repairs in Naantali. The company also used to operate in the ports of Turku and Helsinki, but since 2003 all operations have been concentrated in the Port of Naantali. Turku Repair Yard’s complex is located on the island of Luonnonmaa and the company employs about 50 employees. During busy periods an additional 250-500 workers can be employed.

The Luonnonmaa shipyard is one of the largest dry docks in Northern Europe. Close to a hundred ships visit the dock annually and the personnel have long experience of demanding repairs and conversions. In addition to the repairs performed on site, Turku Repair Yard offers voyage repair services in ports or at sea. When, for example, a customer’s ship in Rotterdam needs repairs, the voyage repair unit of Turku Repair Yard is available.

The advantage of Naantali, from the Repair Yard’s point of view, is that the port and the oil harbour both have heavy traffic, meaning potential customers. In addition, the location of the port at the junction between two major roads is logistically favourable. Turku Repair Yard also cooperates with other companies operating in the Port of Naantali, mainly Finnlines, whose ships transport large cargo items to Sweden quickly and flexibly. All in all, the Port of Naantali offers excellent opportunities for Turku Repair Yard, both now and in the future.

Suomen Viljava operates in 19 different storage locations in Finland. Our storage capacity is 1.4 million tons. The annual throughput of grains and other bulk products is approximately 2.5 million tons.

Silo terminals of Rauma, Naantali, Helsinki, Loviisa and Kotka are situated at ports. These ports are able to serve ships year-round.

Suomen Viljava fulfills the handling- and storage requirements of GTP (Coceral’s Good Trading Practise) standards and has the certificate to prove it.
