A total of over 8.07 million tonnes of cargo was transported through the Port of Naantali\u2019s quays and\/or fairways and water areas maintained by it (incl. transports to and from the oil refinery) in 2020. Despite the global Covid-19 pandemic the total transport volume (loaded + unloaded) in the port area increased by around 7%, or nearly 500,000 tonnes, compared to the previous year. The limit of 8 million tonnes has only been exceeded four times before in Naantali. Throughout the history of the port, the transport volume has three times been higher than in 2020.<\/p>\n
Examined by port site, the share of the Naantali inner harbour Kantasatama<\/strong> and Luonnonmaa<\/strong> port site of the total transports was nearly 39%, or a total of over 3.12 million tonnes, of which the share of international transports was 93%. The cargo volume transported through the said areas of the port was around 46,000 tonnes, or over 7%, more compared to the previous year.<\/p>\n In the oil harbour<\/strong> transports through the quays of the Neste oil refinery accounted for around 61% of the total transport volume of the Port of Naantali and stood at around 4.94 million tonnes, which in turn was up by 6% or around 285,000 tonnes on the previous year. International transports accounted for around 63% of the transports of the oil refinery and domestic for 37%.<\/p>\n The share of international transports was nearly 75% of the total transport volume in the Naantali port area, totalling around 6.03 million tonnes which includes around 30,000 tonnes of transit shipments of grain that arrived from Russia by rail and was shipped through Naantali. The share of domestic transports (including ro-ro traffic between Naantali and L\u00e5ngn\u00e4s, \u00c5land islands, and coastal traffic mainly related to distribution of fuel) was just over 25%, or around 2.04 million tonnes.<\/p>\n Of the total transport volume, export shipments stood at around 2 million tonnes (+15%) and imports at nearly 4.03 million tonnes (+3%). Incoming domestic transports totalled around 0.84 million tonnes (+31%) in the Naantali port area, and outgoing domestic shipments totalled around 1.20 million tonnes (-5%).<\/p>\n The number of vessel calls in the Port of Naantali totalled 1,068 in 2020, which was 102 vessel calls more compared to 2019. The total net tonnage of the vessels was over 12.2 million NT (+5%), while it stood at 11.6 million NT a year before. The number of vessel calls in the oil harbour was 316, which was four vessel calls more compared to a year before. The total net tonnage of the vessels that called in the oil harbour stood at nearly 1.93 million NT (+4%) and was around 0.08 million NT higher compared to 2019.<\/p>\n A total of 141,876 units of trucks, trailers and different other heavy vehicle combinations were transported by ferry through the Port of Naantali in 2020, down by around 1%, or 1,596 units, on the previous year.<\/p>\n Different vehicles arriving in or departing from the Port of Naantali on Roro and Ropax vessels, however, carried over 2.05 million tonnes (+5%) of cargo, up by around 106,000 tonnes on the previous year. Of the above cargo volume, tank transports of dangerous goods accounted for over 153,000 tonnes, up by 3% on the previous year.<\/p>\n A total of 134,448 people (-30%) travelled on Ropax vessels via the Port of Naantali, of which 13,397 (-82%) were leisure passengers. The travel restrictions due to the pandemic caused a steep fall in the passenger volume.<\/p>\n The volume of dry bulk cargo transported via the Port of Naantali in 2020 totalled around 0.97 million tonnes, up by over 10%, or around 91,000 tonnes, on the previous year. Bulk products involve strong fluctuation by year and season \u2013 both up and down.<\/p>\n Wood chips will increasingly replace coal in the raw material shipments needed for heat production in TSE\u2019s multi-fuel power plant located next to the port. In 2020, after a gradual decrease of several years, coal imports totalled only around 105,000 tonnes, down by nearly 52%, or around 112,000 tonnes on the previous year. Imports of wood chips and firewood for wood chips, to replace coal, totalled nearly 315,000 tonnes, up by around 49% on the previous year.<\/p>\n Grain transports totalled nearly 292,000 tonnes in 2020, which includes around 30,000 tonnes of transit shipments of grain that arrived from Russia by rail. The volume of grain transports increased by 31% or nearly 69,000 tonnes on the previous year.<\/p>\n A significant volume of many other raw materials and ingredients needed by the industry, trade and agriculture, such as salt, cement, animal feeds, fertilisers, gypsum, peat, recycled materials, gravel etc. were transported through the Port of Naantali, totalling nearly 604,000 tonnes.
